MTG Reality Fracture: Hexhaven, Echoed Pairs, and a Blockbuster Jace
MTG Reality Fracture is officially live. Wizards of the Coast released the 114th Magic: The Gathering expansion on October 2, 2026 — and the full card list is already on Scryfall for anyone who wants to browse every card in the set. It is the event-set climax of the three-year Echoverse arc, the story where Jace Beleren reshapes the Multiverse into his “perfect” vision — a reality without Eldrazi, Bolas, or Phyrexians. The result is Hexhaven, a reality-flipped Strixhaven inside a geometrically impossible tower, and one of the most mechanically ambitious Standard sets of 2026. For Commander players, it lands with a mythic Tarmogoyf reprint, a color-shifted Chandra, and a Jace planeswalker built to be a format-defining card.

Reality Fracture Is Live: The Climax of the Echoverse Arc
First teased at Gen Con’s 2023 Announcement Day and named at MagicCon Atlanta 2025, Reality Fracture has been on players’ radar for three years. Now that it’s out, it delivers on the “what if?” premise Wizards promised: a set that improves on Planar Chaos-style color philosophy by asking what Strixhaven looks like in a world Jace designed to remove suffering itself.
The main Standard-legal set uses the code FRA and weighs in at roughly 290 cards, including a massive 86-card run of echoed pairs — alternate-reality versions of existing cards with new art, new frames, and sometimes new colors. Borderless echoed pairs appear in every Play Booster, alongside shattered mirror showcase cards. Two companion products launched the same week: the Reality Fracture Commander decks (FRC) and, on Arena, the Arena Direct event series running October 2–11 where digital play wins physical cards.

- Notable reprints: mythic Tarmogoyf and Chandra, Torch of Defiance
Echoed Pairs and the New Collecting Model
The mechanical headline is Empower Jace, an ability word tied to the set’s story engine — but the collecting headline is echoed pairs. Each pair presents a card and its alternate-reality twin: same mana value, mirrored color identity, different art and frame treatment. In practice this means Standard players are evaluating twice as many new cards as a normal set, and Commander players get a fresh wave of build-arounds that deliberately warp color-pie expectations.
Wizards also leaned into pull-rate drama. Shattered mirror cards — a fractured-glass frame treatment reserved for the set’s marquee cards — have become the chase pull of the fall, with early singles prices on the top echoes already settling into the $30–80 range. It echoes the My Precious Ring dynamic from The Hobbit set in August: one marquee object, multiple frame treatments, and a collector market that moves within hours of release.
There’s also a competitive footnote worth knowing: two Reality Fracture Special Guests — Mind Twist and Eye of Ugin — were preemptively banned in Historic and Brawl on September 14, two weeks before the set even released. Wizards clearly did not want a repeat of The One Ring’s Arena dominance.

The Chase Cards Commander Players Are Talking About
Four cards are dominating deck-building conversations in week one:
Together they make Reality Fracture one of those rare sets where Standard players, eternal players, and Commander players all get a headline card.

- The Theorist, Jace Beleren — the set’s face card and its most pushed planeswalker. Clocking in at mythic with a loyalty-heavy design, it’s the Jace card the story has been building toward for three years. Expect it in control shells across Standard, Pioneer, and cEDH-adjacent blue decks.
- Loyal Tutor — a white instant-speed tutor at mythic that has immediate implications for Commander. Any deck that can cast it now has a clean answer to “find the exact piece” turns, and early buzz puts it alongside the best white tutors ever printed.
- Tarmogoyf (mythic reprint) — the Modern staple returns in FRA with new art by Lucas Graciano. Modern and Legacy players have been waiting for a clean reprint window, and this one lands right as the fall paper season starts.
- Chandra, Torch of Defiance (color-shifted echo) — the beloved four-mana Chandra appears in the echoed-pair treatment, which has set collector Twitter alight. The original is a Modern and Cube staple; the echo is pure collector bait with real playability upside.
Why This Matters for Proxy Players
New-set week is the most expensive week to be a Magic player. The chase cards above — Jace, Loyal Tutor, the shattered-mirror echoes — are trading at launch-week premiums, and a Commander deck built around the new Hexhaven legends with real copies easily runs into four figures. That’s precisely when proxies earn their keep: you proxy the new tech, test the meta for a month, and only buy the real copies of the cards that survive.
With MakeProxyCard pricing, a full 100-card Commander deck built around the Reality Fracture chase cards costs roughly what two launch-week booster packs do.
