Counterspell MTG: The Two-Mana Blue Instant That Defines Magic
Counterspell is the original blue instant. Two mana, one blue pip, one line of rules text: Counter target spell. Printed 88 times across 33 years, it has appeared in more Magic sets than any other instant and ranks as the 16th most-played card on EDHREC.

Quick Facts
The Card at a Glance
What Counterspell Does
Counterspell costs two blue mana and counters one spell on the stack. No modes, no choices, no conditions โ it does one thing and does it perfectly. That simplicity is exactly why it has outlasted every competing permission spell for 33 years.
The card was almost banned in Commander. The Rules Committee ultimately kept it legal because countering a single spell at two mana is fair in a format with 40-life starting totals and 99-card singleton decks. The result: Counterspell sees play in roughly 35% of blue Commander decks, slotted alongside more conditional permission like Swan Song and Force of Negation.
Outside Commander, Counterspell is a tier-one interaction in Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, and Canadian Highlander. The only major format where it does not appear is Pioneer โ Wizards held it back from that format to keep blue permission in check.

Strategic Applications
When to Cast Counterspell
The “counter or let it resolve” decision defines blue strategy. Two mana is cheap enough to hold up early but expensive enough that you cannot counter everything. Strong play patterns include:
Best Formats for Counterspell
Sample Deck Inclusion
“` Modern UR Murktide 4 Counterspell 4 Dragon’s Rage Channeler 4 Murktide Regent 4 Expressive Iteration 3 Lightning Bolt 2 Spell Pierce 2 Unholy Heat 4 Scalding Tarn 4 Spirebluff Canal … (75 cards total) “`
Counterspell is the four-of interaction slot in this list. It backs up every aggressive Murktide play โ countering a removal spell on their turn, then deploying a Delve threat on yours. In Commander, the same card becomes a one-of that catches combo pieces and game-winning sorceries.

- Counter the combo piece, not the payoff. If your opponent casts Thassa’s Oracle and Demonic Consultation in the same turn, countering Consultation forces them to rebuild. Countering Oracle lets them try again next turn.
- Save it for the threat, not the setup. Against a creature deck, let the dork resolve and counter their real payoff (Craterhoof Behemoth, Avenger of Zendikar, overrun effects).
- Hold up mana early, deploy threats late. In a tempo deck, casting your own threat on turn three and leaving two blue up is usually stronger than casting Counterspell on their turn two play.

Meta Positioning
Counterspell is the benchmark against which every new permission spell is judged. Tested alternatives like March of Swirling Mist, An Offer You Can’t Refuse, and Displacer Kitten all carry additional cost or condition. None of them replace Counterspell; they sit beside it. The card has not been errata’d, banned, or functionally revised since Alpha โ a record unmatched by any other Magic card still legal in 2026.
- โ The cleanest permission ever printed โ no conditions, no modes, no downside
- โ Universal blue mana cost โ slots into every blue deck without mana-base friction
- โ 88 prints means art variety โ every player has a favorite version
- โ Cheap real-card market ($1-3 for non-foil recent reprints, $0.40-1.60 proxied)
- โ Legal in Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, Commander, Canadian Highlander โ broadest format coverage of any blue instant
- โ No flash or alternative casting mode โ opponent knows it is held up
- โ Cannot counter uncounterable spells โ loses to Cavern of Souls, Dovin’s Veto
- โ Two mana is expensive against one-mana threats (lackey decks, Red Deck Wins)
- โ Banned in Pioneer โ Wizards actively restricting the card’s reach
Iconic Print Variations
Counterspell has 88 total prints. Each print has its own character โ here’s a look at five of the most iconic versions that have shaped how players see this card.
Limited Edition Alpha (1993) โ The classic original. Mark Poole’s iconic blue wizard, slightly off-white card stock, black border. The version every player pictures when they hear “Counterspell.” $548 in NM condition.
Strixhaven Mystical Archive (2021) โ Rindo Karasuba’s anime-inspired alternate art. A blue mage surrounded by floating tomes and arcane geometry. The print that made Counterspell a Modern sideboard all-star again. $27 in NM.
Final Fantasy: Through the Ageless (2025) โ Yoshitaka Amano’s signature flowing inkwork. The legendary Final Fantasy artist brings his signature ethereal style to Magic’s most reprinted blue spell. $2.60 in NM โ the cheapest “premium” art in the card’s history.
Commander Masters (2023) โ Jason Chan’s atmospheric re-imagining. Moody blues, swirling arcane energy, the print you see in most Commander deck tech photos. $3.44 in NM.
Marvel Spider-Man (2025) โ Steve Ditko’s psychedelic 1960s Marvel style. A surprising crossover that reimagined Counterspell as comic-book counter-magic. $11.49 in NM โ the most expensive recent reprint thanks to Marvel hype.

Counterspell vs Mana Drain
Mana Drain is strictly better in raw power โ countering a five-mana spell lets you cast a five-mana threat of your own. But Counterspell is legal in twice as many formats and costs half as much. For 80% of blue decks, Counterspell is the right choice.
