Mana Crypt MTG: The Two-CMC Artifact That Wins Every Format
If you have ever lost a Commander game to a turn-one Ad Nauseam, a turn-two Thassa’s Oracle, or a Turn-3 Breach combo, you have almost certainly lost to Mana Crypt. The single most impactful colorless artifact printed since Sol Ring, Mana Crypt is the reason cEDH tables ban it in casual circles and chase it in competitive ones.

Quick Facts
What Mana Crypt Does
Tap: Add {C}{C} to your mana pool. Then flip a coin. If you lose the flip, Mana Crypt deals 3 damage to you.
That is the entire card. There is no mode, no condition, no “if you control” clause — it just produces double colorless with a 50/50 chance of burning you for three. In any deck that can mitigate 3 damage (every Commander deck runs 40 life; most cEDH decks use life as a resource anyway), Mana Crypt is the cleanest source of fast mana ever printed.
> “When you’re playing cEDH, life is a resource. Three damage on a coin flip is a rounding error.” — common cEDH sentiment
Mana Crypt is banned in Modern and Standard, restricted in Vintage and Legacy, and fully legal in Commander — where it has become the de facto “is your deck competitive” litmus test.

Strategic Applications
Why Mana Crypt Wins the Game on Turn 1
In cEDH, the math is simple: a turn-1 Mana Crypt is a turn-1 Sol Ring plus one extra colorless mana. With Crypt online, you can drop a Mox, a Mox, a Jeweled Lotus into your commander, and start comboing before the rest of the table has resolved a single spell.
Life as a Resource
The coin flip is not a downside — it’s a feature. Ad Nauseam decks love it because the 3 damage matters less than the 2 mana. Necropotence decks love it because you were going to pay that life anyway. Even non-combo decks use it because the upside outweighs the risk in any deck that plans to win before turn 6.
Sample Deck Inclusion
“` Commander: Tymna the Weaver + Kraum, Ludevic’s Opus cEDH Blue Farm 1 Mana Crypt 1 Sol Ring 1 Arcane Signet 1 Chrome Mox 1 Mox Diamond 1 Lotus Petal 1 Mox Opal 1 Ancient Tomb 1 City of Traitors … “`
A turn-1 Crypt into turn-2 Thassa’s Oracle or Ad Nauseam is the standard cEDH gold-line. Crypt is in roughly 65% of all cEDH decks on EDHREC’s top-1000 list — second only to Sol Ring itself.

Competitive Viability
Strengths
Weaknesses

- ✅ Zero mana value, two mana produced — the cleanest mana rock in the game.
- ✅ Tapped for any color via generic mana — works in every Commander.
- ✅ Synergizes with life-as-resource strategies (Ad Naus, Necro, Bolas’s Citadel).
- ✅ Triggers metalcraft, affinity, and other artifact-matter payoffs.
- ❌ 50% chance of 3 damage to you on every tap — kills you fast in Voltron decks.
- ❌ Banned in Modern/Standard — locked to eternal formats.
- ❌ $50-90 real price tag (depending on art) — proxy-friendly.
- ❌ Soft-banned by many casual playgroups; requires Rule Zero conversation.
5 Iconic Prints of Mana Crypt
Mana Crypt has been printed 19 times across Magic’s history. Here are five of the most visually distinct versions:
Special Guests (SPG, 2023) — Dominik Mayer — The newest and most accessible Mythic print. White-bordered showcase frame with classic Mana Crypt orb art. The print most players under 25 picture when they think “Mana Crypt.”
Magic Online Promos (PRM, 2020) — Ron Spencer — Sleek borderless promo treatment. Ron Spencer’s signature painterly style gives the Crypt orb a darker, more dramatic energy than the original.
Double Masters (2XM, 2020) — Matt Stewart — The most reprinted showcase frame. Matt Stewart’s version features dramatic lighting and the iconic burst of mana emerging from the orb.
Magic Online Promos (PRM, 2017) — Mark Tedin — The classic 1997-frame original-art treatment. Mark Tedin painted the original Ice Age Crypt, and this 2017 promo is the closest print to that iconic look.
Kaladesh Inventions (MPS, 2016) — Volkan Baǵa — The special ” Invention” treatment with the silver filigree border. Volkan Baǵa’s Cryp features a more mechanical, schematic style than the original — a fan-favorite among foil collectors.

Mana Crypt vs Sol Ring
Both are zero-mana-value rocks. Both produce 2 mana. The differences:
If Sol Ring is the people’s rock, Mana Crypt is the spike’s rock. The 50/50 damage makes it a non-starter for casual tables; the 2 free mana on turn 1 makes it mandatory for cEDH. If you only proxy one card from this list, pick the rock your deck actually wants to run.
